Vangelis Papathanassíou (1943 – 2022)

Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou was born on 29th March 1943 in Agria, a coastal town in Magnesia, Thessaly, Greece, and raised in Athens. He died on 17th May 2022 in Paris from the consequences of covid-19.

As synthesiser pioneer Vangelis was known for his influential soundtracks for films such as Chariots of Fire, 1492: Conquest of Paradise and Blade Runner, and many more.

In addition to film music, he released several solo albums on which he experiments with electronic sounds, although they always remain melodic, sometimes even leaning towards floating new age music.

Composer Vangelis did away with the preconception that synthesizers are always cold and bleak, and he brought emotion into synthesizer music.
